Community safety is about crime, policing and keeping safe – a topic which is top of the list of concerns in Lambeth.

This survey is about what we can do about it – how community groups, voluntary organisations and their members can have their say about reducing crime, improving policing and increasing safety.

The Safer Lambeth Partnership (Lambeth Police, Lambeth Council and others) has asked the Lambeth Community Police Consultative Group to look at how people would like to have their say and to be involved in improving community safety in Lambeth.

If you would like to complete the survey, please complete the community safety survey on-line.

There is one week left for Lambeth residents to choose how Lambeth Council spends £250,000.

As part of the Lambeth Community Action Fund, £250,000 has been allocated to local projects and the local community will choose which ones get the money.

This is the first ever participatory budgeting scheme run by the council The scheme is called “Your borough, your budget, your choice!“

Participatory budgeting involves local people directly in making decisions on the spending priorities of the council.

“This new initiative will give citizens a greater say on how council funds are allocated to community projects,” said Councillor Jim Dickson, Lambeth cabinet member for finance and resources.
“I urge all residents to get involved in deciding which projects are funded – your choice will really make a difference”.

The council has shortlisted twelve projects, which have been divided into three bands of £125,000, £75,000 and £50,000. People can vote for one project from each of the three bands. The winning projects will be announced at the end of October 2009.

Only Lambeth residents on the electoral register are eligible to vote. Voting takes place between 14 September 2009 and 18 October 2009.

There are several ways to make your choice, including online at www.lambeth.gov.uk/yourchoice, by post using the voting card that you will have received in a previous issues of Lambeth Life or by text to 07786 206 955.

To text vote enter ‘Lambeth’ followed by the band number and letter of the project you are voting for and then your full name and postcode. For example text: Lambeth 1a, 2d, 3b Sarah Smith SW6 6HT.

Voting ends on Sunday 18 October 2009.

The road surface of Peardon Street has been in poor condition for some time and as you may know, a new surface will be laid on Wednesday. The work will take just two days and will make the street a much safer and more pleasant place. Your local councillors have asked that disruption be kept to a minimum.

The work in Peardon Street is being done as part of Lambeth Council’s Better Neighbourhoods environmental improvements scheme. In partnership with Lambeth Living, the council is undertaking a £3.5 million programme of environmental works to make Lambeth cleaner, greener and safer.

Your local councillors have strongly supported the Better Neighbourhoods approach, which targets key areas where housing estates that are in most need of environmental improvements are next to the borough’s roads that are in poor condition.

Your councillors believe that by improving estates and streets together, residents will have a far better experience of moving around their local area.

Roads and pavements are only part of the Better Neighbourhoods story. New street trees will be planted, recycling facilities will be improved on estates and tired and outdated street signs and furniture will be replaced.

Members of the Clapham Town Labour Action Team visited Nelsons Row estate to see the new doors. Their installation brings relief to residents from these blocks who for years suffered from broken doors banging and non-residents loitering in the stairwells.

Local councillors supported demands for the replacement of the doors by Nelsons Row Tenants and Residents Association. Whilst visiting the estate they also noted improvements to landscaping outside a block on Triangle Square.
